I had a different theory, away from the Disney-type fairy tales. I think Dr. Whale was "the boy who cried wolf". Another form of the word WHALE is WAIL, to cry out.

The boy was supposed to be a caretaker to the sheep and yet he sought attention at all cost. Doctors command attention & respect, especially in small towns. The Dr. seeks attention from women, he's fascinated by Ruby; the boy was fascinated by the wolf. The wolf was the means to what he wanted most.

The boy was ineffective as a shepherd, because after "crying wolf" twice, the townspeople ignored him and all the sheep were killed by the wolf. Have we ever actually seen the doctor be effective? David woke-up because MM read to him; Henry only lived because of a kiss from Emma. From what we've witnessed, Dr. Whale is not much of a doctor. He never has the answers; he just flounders until someone else comes in to save the day (ie patient).

And when the doctor calls out, it's to report something to Regina, the most influential person in his world. The one who has the attention of all in Storybrooke.

That's actually a very interesting theory, particularly if you consider that Ruby's actually the Wolf.

You are incredibly smart, you know that? I was going as far as...aboriginal stories about the whale. And I've actually googled this and people are really stretching and reaching with their theories. But Storybrooke's characters aren't that hard to connect with their fairy tale character- meaning there are always hints that fit comfortably with their fairy tale character. I believe you have figured it out

I have doubts he will be the Beast just because the Belle story was about her having to live in Rumplestiltskin's castle so in theory he was playing the role of the beast..? But then to contradict that in the 'real world' he had her locked in the hospital..

His name does seem to link with Pinocchio but that would be too obvious for Once Upon A Time surely?

Thanks Red! I like that; I couldn't picture him as a prince of any kind. To be honest, I don't like the Dr. Whale character.

It's the first time I've ever seen this actor.
